The Story

The top of the cover, the mouth, and the supporting edge of this Gaiwan are all painted with gold borders. The body of the Gaiwan features a variety of colors, which are gradually applied and adorned with intricate "flower decorations". The outline of the flowers resembles brocade, creating a stunning effect. Under the light, the porcelain appears delicate and smooth, resembling warm jade. The extraordinary craftsmanship is beautifully evident in every detail.

The Gaiwan (Mandarin for covered cup, "zhong" or “cha chung" in Cantonese) has been used in China since around 1350. It consists of a saucer, bowl, and lid, which are designed to be used together. To brew tea with the Hand-painted Flowers And Birds Gaiwan, first place the tea in the bottom of the Gaiwan. Pour in enough boiling water to come just under halfway up the cup, then immediately drain off the water by holding the cup and saucer together, using the lid as a strainer to hold back the leaves. Once the leaves are rinsed, uncover them and inhale the aroma. Next, pour fresh boiling water into the Gaiwan, not directly onto the leaves but down the inside of the cup to set the leaves swirling at the bottom. You can then drink the tea directly from the Gaiwan or pour it into a fair cup to cool it.

The Hand-painted Flowers And Birds Gaiwan is a wonderful brewing method for any type of tea, as long as you carefully monitor the water temperature and brewing time. The tea can be brewed and drunk from the same vessel, or alternatively, the Gaiwan can be used as a teapot, with the tea decanted into a small pitcher or individual tasting cups.
